This is a long one! Was originally 25 parts (25 days leading up to Christmas perhaps?). Anyway, I got rid of a few….
1. Real tree or Artificial?
Artificial – the smell of pine really annoys me so I coudn’t have real one even if I wanted to. Then there’s the whole thing about cutting down a real, living tree just to sit in my lounge room… I guess there’s always the idea of using a living tree in a pot and then recycling it for next year..
2. When do you put up the tree?
1st weekend in December, or the closest to it that my kids are with me.
3. When do you take the tree down?
ASAP after Christmas (like about the 30th or so)- we got into this habit as we need to clear the tree away to make room to collect the camping gear for annual early January holiday.
4. Favorite gift received as a child?
I remember getting a transistor radio when I was about 8 or 9 – it was black with large green buttons and dials. I thought it was really cool.
5. Hardest/easiest person to buy for?
Tricky. I have no problem with the concept of exchanging gifts but the whole ‘must buy everyone the perfect present’ thing really irks me. My teenage kids are tough to surprise with a gift anymore, but they are usually pretty clear about what they would like so I guess they fall into both hardest and easiest!
6. Do you have a nativity scene?
Yes, although as I’m not religious I only get it out if one of the kids asks for it – so far this year no-one has.
7. Mail or email Christmas cards?
Neither anymore. I might mail a card to a couple of elderly aunts, they like hearing from me and I can send them a couple of photos of the kids, but otherwise nothing.
8. Favorite Christmas Movie?
9. When do you start shopping for Christmas?
Um, see my earlier comments about commercialisation etc. I usually spend so long moaning about how much I hate the pressure of Christmas shopping that I leave it to the last minute to get those things I ‘need’ to buy. Having said that, it’s mid December and I’m about half way through my (short) list. Love online shopping at this time of the year.
10. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present?
I don’t think I’ve ever re-gifted – although I don’t have a problem with that concept at all.
11. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas?
Mango, prawns, gingerbread, ham off the bone.
12. Lights on the tree?
Coloured and not too many (I have a horror of kitsch and so tend to lean towards conservative and slightly boring instead)
13. Favorite Christmas song?
Great album Carols and Capers by Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band – anything from that. Not Bing Crosby.
14. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning?
Christmas Day. Traditionally, the kids (starting with my brother and I when we were growing up) could get up and open ‘Santa’ presents whenever, but we had to wait for the grownups to be awake before opening ‘wrapped’ presents. I still do this with my kids now (although now I’m usually digging them out of bed by mid-morning so we can get it over with and on with the day!).
15. Most annoying thing about this time of the year?
16. Favorite food for Christmas dinner?
Seafood, yummy salads, ham off the bone, ice cream and possibly trifle.
17. What do you want for Christmas this year?
Same as always – peace, happiness and the health of those around me.
